Greenville officer shot in parking lot, suspect dies after chase and shootout

GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. (WTOC) - The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Sunday in Greenville County.

According to a press release, a Greenville Police Department officer was sitting in his parked patrol vehicle in the parking lot of the Greenville County Law Enforcement Center when a man drove up next to the patrol vehicle and shot the officer. The gunman then drove away.

Officials say the officer was injured and taken to the hospital for treatment. He has since been released from the hospital.

Greenville County Sheriff’s Office deputies identified and located the gunman’s car. During a vehicle chase between deputies and the man, there was an exchange of gunfire and a car crash involving both the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office and the man.

After the chase, there was another exchange of gunfire. The release states the man was found dead in his vehicle.

The Greenville County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as David William Lane, 42.

SLED was asked to investigate by the Greenville Police Department and the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office.

SLED says this is an ongoing investigation and it will not release any other information about the case at this time.

The incident in Greenville County is the second officer-involved shooting in South Carolina in 2026. This is the first officer-involved shooting for the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office this year.

In 2025, there were 45 officer-involved shootings in South Carolina. The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office had seven officer-involved shootings last year.
