SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) -Volunteers were out in the Hostess City Saturday for the fifth annual Greek and Civic Cleanup Day, teaming up with Keep Savannah Beautiful to pick up litter and spruce up parts of the city.

Leah Scott-Perry, the executive director of Keep Savannah Beautiful, said the event is designed to bring neighbors, student groups and businesses together around a shared goal.

“It’s a great example of when the community comes together... we come and clean up the community,” Perry said.

Organizers highlighted participation from Greek organizations and high school students, with crews spreading out to collect trash and target problem areas.

Perry said cleanups like this are important, but she emphasized that keeping Savannah litter-free is an everyday responsibility.

“Our community, your first line of defense when it comes to our litter prevention. So, when you’re disposing of your litter properly, you’re the first line of defense in keeping us beautiful,” she said.

Among the volunteers was William Perry, who said he joined the effort because a cleaner Savannah benefits everyone.

“The safer, you know, and cleaner places are, the nicer it is to be there,” he said.

He added that one of the best parts of cleanup days is seeing different groups show up for the same cause.

Scott-Perry said Saturday’s event also serves as the kickoff to Keep Savannah Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup season. A citywide cleanup is scheduled for April 28, with more organizations expected to participate.

People interested in volunteering can find details and upcoming opportunities through Keep Savannah Beautiful’s website and social media pages.
