Georgia unemployment ticked up across all regions in January, Dept. of Labor says

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Unemployment rose in all 12 of Georgia’s regional commissions in January, a post-holiday bump the Georgia Department of Labor says reflects seasonal jobs ending after the holidays.

For job seekers, though, the change doesn’t feel seasonal.

“It was tough to find a job last year,” said Vignesh Sathia, a computer science student focused on artificial intelligence who has been applying for internships. “It’s a little better than what it was last year, but it’s still tough.”

The department’s report shows the January increase was broad-based across the state, underscoring what some economists describe as a job market that can feel unsettled even when hiring continues in certain industries.

Georgia Labor Commissioner Bárbara Rivera Holmes said the state’s diversified economy is a competitive advantage.

“That mix of industries and talent allows us to respond quickly to shifting workforce demands across sectors while continuing to expand opportunity for hardworking Georgians,” Holmes said in a statement.

Ray Hill, a professor at Emory University’s Goizueta Business School, said the diversity of Georgia’s economy can help cushion the impact when one part of the job market slows.

“Not to panic. There’s no indication we’re heading for disaster,” Hill said.

Still, Hill said uncertainty around tariffs and energy prices can hit specific industries quickly, making it harder to predict what comes next.

“It’s not clear where the economy is really heading,” he said.

Analysts say initial unemployment claims and layoff notices can offer early clues about whether January’s increase fades as seasonal hiring returns, or whether the uptick signals a broader shift.

The Georgia Department of Labor is expected to release updated figures in the next few months.
