GBI assisting in deadly Wednesday shooting investigation, confirms Claxton PD
CLAXTON, Ga. (WTOC) - [Update] The GBI announced neither of the victims have passed away.
In a statement Saturday, the GBI wrote, “The release reporting the death of Jonathan O’Neil Gaines was inaccurate.
We acknowledge the seriousness of this mistake and accept full responsibility. We sincerely apologize to Mr. Gaines and his family.
The GBI investigation into the shooting remains active and ongoing."
[Update] The GBI is investigating a fatal Wednesday night shooting in Claxton.
Officers say just before 11:00 p.m. Wednesday night Claxton Police responded to gunshots near Terrell Street.
When they arrived the GBI says officers found 48-year-old Jonathan Gaines shot several times inside a vehicle.
He was taken to the hospital and placed on life support.
Friday Gaines died from his injuries.
The GBI says there was also a second person inside the vehicle who was treated and released from the hospital.
[Original Story] Claxton Police confirmed to WTOC the Georgia Bureau of Investigations was asked to assist an investigation into a Wednesday shooting.
Claxton Police confirmed there was a shooting at around 11 p.m. Wednesday on Terrell Street near Broad Street.
