GA drivers speak out on gas price surge, ride-shares feeling the squeeze

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Drivers across Georgia are feeling another hit at the pump as gas prices climb, and AAA says global tensions are pushing fuel markets higher.

AAA data shows regular gas is averaging about $4 a gallon in Georgia, while some stations in Pooler were closer to $4.30 a gallon Thursday.

The national average for regular gasoline is about $4.55 a gallon, according to AAA.

For some drivers, filling up is becoming a routine frustration.

“It’s a hassle because when I have to fill my car up I’m right back,” driver Jalen Shinholst said.

Shinholst said premium fuel is even harder to swallow.

“I’m paying five dollars a gallon right now, man. That is way too much,” he said. “I’ve actually been paying three dollars, and now it’s five. That’s a problem.”

As fuel markets react to uncertainty and supply concerns, ride-share drivers said they are feeling squeezed because their pay does not rise with gas prices.

“Well the rates are not going up on the rides, and the gas is over a dollar gallon more than what we were paying before all the war and everything, so it’s really impacting the drivers,” ride-share driver Donald Brotherton said.

Drivers are also watching the calendar as Georgia’s gas tax suspension, which has been saving drivers about 33 cents a gallon, is set to expire at 11:59 p.m. on May 19. Gov. Brian Kemp has not announced whether it will be extended.

“I really think he should extend it because Georgians, we are suffering,” driver Richard Williams said. “Everybody I know is complaining about gas right now and it’s not just a me thing, it’s everybody.”

AAA says prices can change quickly and recommends using gas price apps and reward programs, combining errands to cut down on miles, avoiding aggressive driving and keeping tires properly inflated to improve fuel economy.
