SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Six people are displaced after an early morning fire damaged three homes on Leeward Drive in Chatham County, according to a post from the Chatham County Fire Department’s Facebook page.

Crews were dispatched at 2:02 a.m. for a reported structure fire with possible entrapment. Firefighters arrived to find a heavily involved fire and called a second alarm, with additional support from Savannah Fire Department.

Officials say the fire spread to neighboring homes, damaging three structures. Three residents escaped the original home safely, and firefighters rescued three kittens from the scene. Animal Control was notified.

The American Red Cross is assisting the six displaced residents.

Crews used more than 40,000 gallons of water, including a master stream, to battle the fire. It was brought under control at 2:48 a.m. and declared out at 3:21 a.m.
