Fatal shooting on Capital Street leaves one dead, one injured

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - One man died and another was injured in a shooting at Capital Grocery on Thursday, January 22, and police believe both victims shot each other during a fight.

The Savannah Police Department responded to reports of a shooting in the 2000 block of Capital Street around 4:10 p.m. Officers found one man suffering from gunshot wounds at the scene.

Police and emergency medical services performed life-saving measures before transporting the victim to Memorial Health University Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.

That victim was identified as 21-year-old Johnny Fleming.

A second victim connected to the incident later arrived at the hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

After a preliminary investigation, officers believe both victims shot each other during a physical fight. The investigation is ongoing.

Police investigate shooting at Capital Grocery

WTOC had a team in the area and observed roughly 15 officers and officials from multiple agencies responding to the scene. At least eight Savannah Police Department cars, one public schools police car, and one emergency medical services vehicle were at the location.

A large area in front of Capital Grocery was taped off as a crime scene. Two backpacks were visible on the ground outside the store, and a silver minivan was inside the cordoned area. A forensics unit was also at the scene investigating the incident.
