Fanatics launches prediction markets in Georgia and South Carolina

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) -Georgians and South Carolinians can now wager on sports, award shows and other cultural events through prediction markets, even though sports betting and gambling remain illegal in both states.

Fanatics launched its prediction market platform, Fanatics Markets, in Georgia and South Carolina last week. The platform lets users trade contracts based on how events will unfold in sports, politics or entertainment.

Instead of traditional betting, users purchase contracts that pay out only if their predictions come true.

Jay Trikha, owner of Savannah Taphouse on Broughton Street, said fantasy teams are popular among patrons and expects the trend to grow with Fanatics Markets’ launch.

“Fantasy teams are definitely huge,” Trikha said.

Trikha said he already sees customers using similar prediction apps beyond sports.

“We host other events, like watch parties for TV shows and stuff, and I have noticed that a lot of people are on Kalshi betting on the results of those,” Trikha said. “I think that might increase with another option being available, and Fanatics being the brand that it is, they might be pushing that more.”

Fanatics Markets describes itself as a user-friendly prediction market platform built through a strategic partnership with Crypto.com. Users can trade contracts on football games, politics, award shows and other events.

The company said it gives fans a way to engage with sports and culture while profiting if their predictions are correct.

“At the end of the day, if you’re having fun and you’re doing it responsibly, I’m all for it,” Trikha said.

Despite the launch of prediction markets in Georgia and South Carolina, sports betting remains illegal in both states.
