Families travel to Savannah to celebrate Christmas traditions together

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Families from across the region traveled to Savannah this Christmas to celebrate with loved ones, bringing their holiday traditions to the Historic District.

One South Carolina family said they started a new tradition just a few years ago of taking family trips instead of focusing solely on gifts.

“Try and make it a memory instead of a gift, so we try and take a trip and do something fun, so this year we picked Savannah,” said Barbra Davis, a visitor.

The Davis family said presents still play an important role in their Christmas celebration.

“Yeah, that was Dad’s brainchild. He said it was a good idea to bring them all,” Davis said. “Well, we said maybe Santa could come early, but Dad said, oh, it’s not Christmas without presents.”

Another family traveling to Savannah brought Christmas to their son who is stationed in the area. The Reeves family from North Carolina said being together is what matters most.

“Around the Christmas tree, and opening the presents, and just all of us together,” said Chris and Tally Reeves.

The family said gifts make Christmas morning extra special, with the father admitting he enjoys the presents as much as the children.

“Open presents and going outside and play with them,” Chris Reeves said. “You know, there we go. He’s a big kid. Of course, I’m the dad and I’m the oldest, but I’m the bigger kid. He really is.”

When WTOC asked one young boy about his favorite part of Christmas is, he put it simply:

“Toys.”
