FDA establishes new Covid-19 vaccination recommendations

by Stephanie Adkisson

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The FDA announced that only people 65 and older, or 6 months through 64 years of age with at least one underlying health condition are now the only group of people recommended to get the COVID-19 vaccination.

The FDA also announced there was an updated version of the vaccine that will better protect individuals from the virus.

“I couldn’t be more pleased to announce that as of today, the covid vaccine for healthy children and healthy pregnant women have been removed from the CDC recommended immunization schedule,” said Robert F. Kennedy JR.

WTOC also spoke with local doctor Timothy Connelly at Memorial Health to find out why the FDA made this decision.

“In young healthy individuals who have no major medical problems, it would be very rare for them to get covid and end up in the hospital and dying,” said Connelly. “It has happened but it would be very rare, so in those individuals they are not recommending they get a routine covid-19 booster anymore."

Doctor Connelly also told WTOC that the majority of his colleagues in the infectious disease department are on board with these new recommendations.
