EFFINGHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed a deputy was struck by a vehicle Friday evening.

Officials say a crash occurred near Highway 80 and Rose Road. That’s near the Bryan County and Effingham County lines near the Ogeechee River Bridge.

The sheriff’s office says just before 7 p.m. Friday, one of their deputies was finishing working a crash out on Highway 80, near Rose Road, when another vehicle struck the deputy.

The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office confirms Corporal Daniel Handshumaker was injured in the incident. He was transported to a hospital in Savannah with serious injuries, but he is conscious.

The Effingham County Traffic Unit is investigating the crash.

Effingham County Sheriff McDuffie stressed the importance of slowing down and, when safe, moving over for emergency vehicles with their lights activated.

This is a developing story.

WTOC will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as new information is released.
