EMA director, storm victim urge early sign-up for hurricane registry
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - With hurricane season just months away, emergency management officials are urging residents who may need extra help during a storm to sign up now for the Hurricane Registry.
The registry is designed to assist people with functional, access or medical needs who may require additional support during an emergency, including evacuation.
Bryan County Emergency Management Agency Director Allie Padgett said registering ahead of time is critical, especially for those who may not be able to leave their homes on their own.
“If we don’t know about you, we can’t help you,” Padgett said. “The time to register is now — well before hurricane season begins.”
The push comes as some residents are still recovering from Tropical Storm Debby, which caused significant damage across Bryan County and other parts of the Southeast in 2024.
Mary Mann, who lives on Rushing Street in Richmond Hill, said the storm was devastating.
“It destroyed me , we worked really hard, this is our first home together,” Mann said.
She and her husband are still working to repair their home. With another hurricane season approaching, Mann said she is especially concerned about neighbors who may be more vulnerable.
“You have elderly residents, a deaf child in the neighborhood,” she said.
Officials say the registry is particularly important for people who are bedridden, have disabilities or require help with daily living activities. However, those who live in nursing homes, assisted living facilities or personal care homes are not eligible.
Applications for the Hurricane Registry close 72 hours before a tropical storm arrives.
To apply, residents can call 1-833-243-7344 and follow the prompts for their county. Applications can also be submitted on (this website: Hurricane Registry For Those with Functional, Access, or Medical Needs - Georgia Coastal Health District Georgia Coastal Health District )
