ECSO gives update on status of deputy hospitalized after being struck by vehicle
EFFINGHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office has provided an update on the status of Corporal Daniel Handshumaker, who was rushed to the hospital after being struck by a vehicle on Friday, December 12, 2025.
The ECSO says Cpl. Handshumaker is in good spirits, but has a long road to recovery ahead of him. The Sheriff’s Office says that he is awaiting surgery at Memorial after breaking multiple bones in his legs, but is expected to make a full recovery.
“Please continue to send all your positive thoughts and prayers to Cpl. Handshumaker, his family (and work family as well),” the ECSO says in a social media post.
Sheriff McDuffie also thanked the following agencies for their assistance in getting Cpt. Handshumaker to the hospital:
- Bloomingdale Police Department
- Pooler Police Department
- Rincon Police Department
- Port Wentworth Police Department
- Garden City Police Department
- Chatham County Sheriff’s Office
- Chatham County Police Department
- Savannah Police Department
- Effingham County EMS
- Georgia State Patrol
“With your assistance, the roads were completely blocked and safe, allowing EMS to move seamlessly through the city. Cpl. Handshumaker was able to arrive at the hospital safely receive immediate care due to your actions,” said Sheriff McDuffie.
