HILTON HEAD, S.C. (WTOC) - One person is dead after an SUV was found submerged in the water on Hilton Head Island, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP).

Troopers say the crash happened on South Beach Lagoon Drive in the Sea Pines community. SCHP reported the car involved was a 2000 Lexus SUV.

Highway Patrol officials said they received a call around noon Wednesday reporting a vehicle in the water.

One person was found inside the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining fatal injuries, SCHP said.

SCHP said troopers were requested by the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office and are still working to determine more details, including the direction the vehicle was traveling before it entered the water.

Investigators believe the SUV may have gone into the water Monday evening, though the exact time the vehicle entered the water has not been confirmed.

This is a developing story. Stick with WTOC as work to gather more details.
