Do you want golf carts after dark and on four-lane roads? The Bluffton Town Council needs your feedback

by Christopher Teuton

BLUFFTON, SC (WTOC) - The Bluffton Town Council will host a public workshop to gather feedback on local regulations for the use of golf carts and similar vehicles on Tuesday, August 26, 2025.

According to a social media post by the city, the workshop will discuss whether golf carts should be allowed to operate after dark, which under state law requires working headlights and taillights.

The workshop also plans to cover additional restrictions on where and when carts may be driven, including whether to limit use of golf carts on high-traffic areas such as four-lane roads or traffic circles.

The public workshop on golf carts and similar vehicles will be held at 5:30 p.m. in Town Hall’s Council Chambers at 20 Bridge Street, Bluffton, SC.

No votes will be taken at this time, as the workshop is simply intended as a public discussion.

Councilmembers will hear input on how state law and local rules intersect, and whether additional Town regulations are needed to ensure safety on Bluffton’s roads.

According to the Town of Bluffton, State law currently requires:

  • Drivers must be at least 16 years old and hold a valid driver’s license.
  • Golf carts must be registered with the S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) and carry liability insurance.
  • Registration decals must be visible on the windshield.
  • All occupants under 12 must wear a seat belt.
  • Golf carts may only be driven on roads with speed limits of 35 mph or less, and within four miles of their registered address (or, if in a gated community, within four miles of the entrance).

The new statewide golf cart law was signed into law and took effect on May 22, 2025.

The Bluffton Mayor and Bluffton Town Council encourage residents, businesses, and golf cart owners to attend and share their perspectives.
