EFFINGHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shared a response on social media Thursday in regard to a deadly May 1 crash in Effingham County.

Michael Sharpe, 47, was killed in a head-on collision when another vehicle crossed the center line and struck his car on Old Augusta Road South.

The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office arrested Deiby Janamejoy Jansasoy, 27, who was driving the vehicle that struck Sharpe.

According to DHS, Jansasoy came into the country illegally from Columbia in December 2023. He was given a final order to leave the country in April 2026.

DHS’ post from Thursday reads:

This NEVER should have happened.

Deiby Jhonatan Janamejoy Jansasoy, a criminal illegal alien from Colombia, was arrested for vehicular homicide, DUI, and driving without a valid license after killing a Georgia father.

The Biden Administration released this criminal into our nation COMPLETELY UNVETTED after he entered illegally in 2023.

The Effingham County Sheriff’s Office said Jansasoy was transported to the hospital after the crash but attempted to leave prior to being discharged. In a press release, officials said, “presumably due to being wanted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement for deportation.”

Jansasoy was charged with Homicide by Vehicle in the First Degree, Reckless Driving, DUI, Failure to Maintain Lane, and Driving While Unlicensed.

WTOC spoke with Sharpes wife, Crystal, Tuesday. The Sharpe family has started a GoFundMe to help with funeral expenses.
