People from across the region made the trip to the island for the long weekend. The island was filled with Savannah locals and out-of-state visitors.

Wendy Allen, visiting from Tennessee, said the people keep her coming back.

“It’s the locals, they are so friendly you don’t meet a stranger and they treat you like family here,” Allen said. “Tybee is a welcoming place for everybody and I just really enjoy it.”

Joe Bell and Rachel Wynn, both from Savannah, said proximity makes holiday trips easier. Especially with current gas prices.

“We both live in Savannah but were not originally from here, us being 20 minutes is a lot easier,” Bell said. “My parents were down here a month ago and they live 6 hours away so gas was a concern for them, so definitely grateful that we live so close.”

Lifeguards are flying red flags this weekend. Beachgoers are urged to use caution in the water.
