SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - City of Savannah staff responded to a sewage spill Wednesday morning after a failed valve caused an estimated 5,000 gallons to discharge on GA-25 Connector.

The spill occurred at 8 a.m. at 1991 GA-25 Connector when a failed air release valve in a sanitary sewer force main caused sewage to discharge through a manhole.

Officials say city crews stopped the spill by 9:15 a.m.

According to Georgia Environmental Protection Division guidelines, the incident is classified as a minor spill because it involved less than 10,000 gallons.

Second failure at same location

The same air release valve failed last Thursday, October 23, 2025, causing a sewage spill at the same location.

That valve was repaired onsite after the incident, which saw 7,000 gallons of sewage spill.

The faulty valve is being replaced with a new unit. The city said the manhole will be monitored continuously for an extended period to ensure future valve failures are intercepted before spills occur.

The city notified the Georgia Environmental Protection Division, Health Department and City of Savannah Office of Communications per state guidelines.
