City Market tree lighting kicks off ‘Celebrate the Season’ weekend events in Savannah
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A tree lighting ceremony Friday night will kick off “Celebrate the Season,” which is a series of festive weekend events at City Market leading up to Christmas.
The event was originally scheduled to begin last weekend but was postponed due to poor weather conditions.
The tree lighting begins at 6:15 p.m. with a candlelit procession and caroling starting at Wexford’s. The ceremony will feature music by Kimberly Gunn.
After the tree lighting, attendees can enjoy music and live demonstrations in the Art Center, photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus, and a Santa Duck Hunt with hidden prizes.
Weekend festivities continue
Holiday-themed events will continue Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m., with a final celebration scheduled for next Saturday during the same hours.
Saturday’s activities include open-mic Christmas karaoke in the courtyard, a kid’s zone, and a pet parade and costume contest.
Stephen Mitchell, director of the American Prohibition and Pirate Museums in City Market, said the delayed start may work in the event’s favor.
“This weekend is maybe even a little bit more perfect as we’re closer to the season,” Mitchell said. “People are really ready to embrace that holiday, festive atmosphere, and this is the perfect community to do it in.”
Mitchell said the events provide an opportunity for community members to come together during a slower tourism season that impacts local businesses.
“This is a great opportunity to celebrate with other members of the community who are out here every day doing beautiful work, having fun with our visitors and our locals,” Mitchell said. “And this is just the right season to get out and explore that.”
Organizers say attendees can expect seasonal food menus and specialty cocktails at market businesses, shopping opportunities including local art, and live music in the courtyard.
All “Celebrate the Season” events are free to attend.
