Chatham County PD gives alert to gun owners after multiple firearms stolen from vehicles

CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - Six firearms were stolen from vehicles in the last ten days in unincorporated Chatham County, according to the Chatham County Police Department.

In a social media post, CCPD said many of the vehicles involved were unlocked.

They further explained how they determined the cars were unlocked in a comment on social media.

“In some reports the owners say they left the vehicle unlocked. Sometimes, there is security video that shows the crooks simply opening the door. We have a lot of footage over the years that shows criminals pulling on vehicle door handles and then walking away because they don’t want to risk making a commotion by breaking glass. If glass is broken, the assumption is that the vehicle was locked (often confirmed by an owner who says they always lock their vehicles.) There is no penalty in unincorporated Chatham County for leaving a firearm in an unlocked vehicle. But experience tells us that locking your doors and removing valuables is a major deterrent. So, we repeat the message quite often,” commented CCPD.

The police department said most of these incidents happened on the west side of the county but warned it could happen anywhere.

“Every driveway and parking lot is vulnerable no matter where you live,” said CCPD in a social media post.

Police are reminding people to remove valuables from your car and lock your doors. They said they have made large steps forward in the problem of thefts from autos.

“Last year, we had 103 FEWER incidents than in 2024. The simple steps of removing valuables from your car and locking your doors really do make a difference.”

“Please, do not store a weapon in an unlocked vehicle,” concluded the police department in their alert to gun owners.
