Cause of death released for man responsible for shooting, standoff involving Tifton Police

TIFTON, Ga. (WALB) - The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has released the cause of death for the man responsible for the shooting and standoff with Tifton Police on Dec. 5.

The GBI says Davy Deonte Royal, 35, died from self-inflicted injuries while in the Coffee County Jail. The Coffee County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) announced Royal’s death on Dec. 9.

Davy Deonte Royal, 35, was arrested following a standoff with police in Tifton.

Royal was reportedly found unresponsive in his jail cell on Dec. 8. He died from at the Coffee Regional Medical Center after medical professionals tried to perform life-saving treatments.

Royal was arrested Dec. 5 after he barricaded himself in a home in Tifton as officers tried to serve him an arrest warrant. As officers were responding, Royal fired shots and hit two TPD officials, prompting several surrounding agencies to respond.
