Candler Co. deputies stop tractor on I-16

by Christopher Teuton

CANDLER COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - Candler County Sheriff’s deputies made an unusual traffic stop today, October 3, 2025, when they pulled over a tractor traveling on I-16.

The incident prompted the sheriff’s office to issue a public reminder on social media about interstate travel laws, noting that tractors are not permitted on interstates unless specifically authorized by the Georgia Department of Public Safety.

Deputies safely removed the driver from the roadway before any serious incidents occurred.

The sheriff’s office emphasized that interstate highways have minimum speed requirements that slow-moving farm equipment cannot meet.

Georgia law prohibits most farm equipment from traveling on interstate highways due to safety concerns.

“There are actual laws on the books for this,” Candler County Sheriff’s Office says. “And while we are at it, there is also a minimum speed limit for interstate travel. If you cannot keep up, the interstate is not the place to test out your top speed of 25.”

The CCSO used the incident as a teaching moment, reminding residents that common sense should guide transportation decisions.

“The crops will wait, I-16 will not,” the department said in its post about the incident.

No citations or injuries were reported in connection with the traffic stop.
