Burglary, attempted rape suspect arrested in Chatham Co.
CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - The Chatham County Police Department has identified and arrested a man in connection with a burglary and attempted rape that occurred at an apartment complex Sunday, according to a press release WTOC just received.
The release says Chatham County Police Department detectives arrested 43-year-old Rashawn Jerrel Newton, Sr. and charged him first-degree burglary, aggravated assault, criminal attempt to commit rape, and Peeping Tom.
"A victim unknown to the suspect woke up in her apartment in the 5100 block of Garrard Avenue Sunday and found an unclothed man in her bedroom, who fled when the victim began screaming," the release says.
Monday, the Chatham County Police Department asked for the public’s help in identifying the suspect who was captured in the area on surveillance cameras.

The release says that after a detailed and thorough investigation, detectives were able to identify and locate the suspect.
Newton was arrested earlier today, October 24, 2025, and taken to the Chatham County Detention Center.
