Brunswick College Honors Late Softball Player With Memorial Scholarship

by Laney Mayfield

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (WTOC) - The College of Coastal Georgia has established a memorial scholarship honoring Kennedy Ashley Waymer, a student-athlete who died last year after battling cancer.

Waymer was a sophomore at the college and a member of the school’s softball team. She died Oct. 14 after fighting cancer while continuing to pursue her education.

College officials said the Kennedy Ashley Waymer Memorial Scholarship was created to support future students and preserve Waymer’s legacy on campus and in the community.

During her illness, Waymer continued attending classes with support from her family in Jacksonville. Friends, teammates and faculty members remembered her for her determination, positive attitude and commitment to both academics and athletics.

Waymer’s mother and the foundation established in her honor said the goal of the scholarship is to ensure her story continues to inspire others.

The scholarship will provide financial assistance to students at the College of Coastal Georgia while recognizing the lasting impact Waymer had on those around her.
