HARDEEVILLE, S.C. (WTOC) - A suspect is in custody after fleeing police officers and allegedly breaking into a Sleep Inn earlier today.

The Hardeeville Police Department responded to a report of Breaking and Entering at a Sleep Inn early on the morning of October 31, officials say.

In a social media post, the Hardeeville Police Department says that upon their arrival at the Sleep Inn, the suspect fled into the woods.

“The suspect fled on foot across Highway 17, through a field near QuikTrip, and behind the Showtime Fireworks store,” officials stated in a press release.

Officers then used K9 unites to track the suspect. Hardeeville Police says they tracked the suspect for over two miles before successfully apprehending him.

“A special thank you to Jasper County Sheriff’s Office for their teamwork and support during the canine track,” the department writes.

They also shared a photo (embedded below) of some of the officers involved in the incident covered in mud.

Officials say the suspect is charged with Obstruction and Resisting Arrest.
