Body found floating in Savannah River, Chatham County PD investigates

CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - The Chatham County Police Department is investigating after a body was found in the Savannah River Monday afternoon.

According to a police report, the incident happened at around 12:57 p.m. at Foundation Drive.

CCPD officers respond to scene

Multiple officers responded to the scene and provided narrative reports of the incident.

One CCPD officer responded to the scene at 1:16 p.m. where a floating body had been recovered from the Savannah River. According to the officer’s narrative report, Savannah Fire and dock workers recovered the body and secured an unidentified black male underneath a tarp.

Officers on the scene said they searched for identification, but could not find any identifying documents.

One responding officer said they made contact with a witness who told law enforcement he saw the body floating in the water beneath the dock he was standing on at around 12:57 p.m. According to the officer’s narrative report, the witness contacted authorities and assisted Savannah Fire Dept. personnel in retrieving the body from the water.

Another responding officer said he searched the subject and was also unable to find any identification material. A representative from Colonial Group, Inc. arrived on scene and told law enforcement he recognized the subject after seeing him on the property on May 16 but said he did not know his identity.

According to CCPD, next of kin were unable to be notified. The only identifying features provided in the police report is that the subject is a Black male. The Coroner was notified and took custody of the body.

CCPD is investigating this death.
