Body-camera footage sparks investigation of 2 deputies
AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has launched an investigation after reviewing some body camera footage from a few days ago.
The agency said “the actions of two deputies did not meet the high standards and expectations established under Sheriff Brantley’s administration.”
The agency said the footage was recorded on the evening of Dec. 16, when the agency executed multiple search warrants.
We know from a previous news release from the agency that deputies executed search warrants that evening targeting the Youngins With Money gang.
And sources tell News 12 the investigation is related to that case.
Perhaps coincidentally, a bloody photo purportedly of one of the suspects in that case has been posted on social media.
The sheriff’s office hasn’t confirmed whether the image is authentic, whether it’s from a body camera, whether it’s related to the bust or whether it has anything to do with the investigation of the deputies.
However, the image includes the words “Axon body,” a brand of body camera. And the partial date on the image seems to match up with the bust.
The jail booking photo of that suspect, De Ante Cannon, seems to show marks and dried blood consistent with the bloody image from social media, although his face doesn’t appear swollen, and the marks are easy to miss.

Search warrants were executed at the 2300 block of Henry Circle in Augusta, the 1400 block of Feldspar Court in Augusta, and the 1000 block of Candleberry Drive in Grovetown.
Investigators seized about 30 pounds of marijuana, methamphetamine, multiple gang-related items and $211,166 in cash.
The footage in question was reviewed later, the agency said Friday.

“As part of our routine internal auditing process, supervisors regularly review body worn camera footage,” the agency said. “Through that review, concerns were identified, and a formal internal investigation has been initiated.”
Investigators are reviewing additional footage and will conduct interviews with all involved parties to ensure a thorough and fair assessment of the incident, the agency said.
“This process is necessary to gather all facts and ensure accountability,” the agency said.
“The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is committed to professionalism, transparency, and maintaining the trust of our community. Once the investigation is completed, which is anticipated by the first part of next week, we will share our findings with our media partners and the public.”
