BLUFFTON, S.C. (WTOC) - People in Beaufort County celebrated the life of Dr. King and the legacy he left.

There were events throughout the day across the county, with the final one taking place in Bluffton on Monday afternoon.

Hundreds of marchers lined up in front of Bluffton Town Hall.

They walked through downtown until they reached Ma Daisy’s Porch, a popular restaurant in Old Town.

A place where marchers were met with opportunity for fellowship with one another and a time to fill their stomachs after a half-mile march through town.

Everyone in attendance walked, sang, and chanted to honor the life of a man who preached a message of unity, courage, and service to others with a vision for racial equality.

“Having such a great support shows how many people believe that and how many people are still committed to seeing his work and his legacy live on,” Bluffton Town Councilwoman Bridgette Frazier said.

That is still being instilled in the younger generation.

“They’re the ones that are going to be continuing to lead the change and run this community,” Frazier said. “I think they are doing a good job.”

And was a group that was great in number on Monday afternoon in Bluffton.

“I still believe that Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream and the message that he spoke still translates to today,” Bluffton High School Senior, Tamyra Bolden, said.

A generation that at Bluffton High took Dr. King’s messages to heart and created a club called Sisterhood Innovators, which teaches leadership and community service skills that can be used for years to come.

“Take initiative within my community by starting projects, leading events, and just stepping out of my comfort zone to do something new,” Bolden said.

This event was put on by the Bluffton MLK Observance Committee.
