SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - Blood pressure kits are now available for check-out at five Live Oak Public Libraries across three counties, the American Heart Association announced today in a press release.

The kits contain a validated blood pressure device, instructions on how to take your blood pressure, how to interpret a reading, and additional resources, including health centers, to help patrons best manage their blood pressure.

The Live Oak Public Library locations with available blood pressure kits are:

  • Bull Street Library (Chatham County)
  • Oglethorpe Mall Library (Chatham County)
  • Southwest Chatham Library (Chatham County)
  • Springfield Library (Effingham County)
  • Hinesville Library (Liberty County)

We are excited to work with the American Heart Association to offer blood pressure kits to our patrons.

These critical resources will help empower individuals to take control of their health and prevent the long-term risks associated with high blood pressure.

Alissa Landram, director of technical services, Live Oak Public Libraries

According to the American Heart Association, nearly half of adults in the U.S. have high blood pressure, and many don’t even know it.

Of those diagnosed, the AHA says about 75% don’t have their blood pressure under control.

High blood pressure is often referred to as a “silent killer” because it can go undetected until serious health issues arise.

High blood pressure is a leading, controllable risk factor for heart disease and stroke.

By providing these resources through the library system, we’re helping residents become more aware of their blood pressure levels and reduce their risk factors.

Ansley Howze, executive director of the American Heart Association, Southern Coast

Earlier this month, on October 7, 2025, Effingham County voted to dissolve its 80-year partnership with Live Oak Public Libraries.

Effingham County’s library partnership, which includes the operation of the Springfield library, will end in June of 2026.
