Beaufort County officials plan support meeting for St. Helena Island shooting victims

BEAUFORT COUNTY, SC. (WTOC) - Beaufort County officials are planning on rallying behind people impacted by the mass shooting on St. Helena Island.

The meeting will be held at Whale Branch Early College High School and will be a space, where people can get necessary counseling resources.

WTOC spoke with the organizer of the meeting about what he hopes people get from it.

It’s been a little over two and half weeks since the deadly mass shooting on St. Helena Island, where four people were killed and 16 others were injured.

It struck a chord not only with those families, but with the whole county.

Now, several groups are coming together to offer counseling resources to people to hopefully help in the healing process.

There are still a lot of unanswered questions from that Saturday night at Willie’s Bar and Grill on St. Helena.

No one has officially been charged, two separate rewards are now being offered asking people to come forward, and the sheriff’s office continues to call on the community to help.

While all of this has been going on, several groups have held vigils and community outreach meetings to try and support one another through this tragic time.

Pastor Isaac Gordon, who is a Beaufort County School District Board Member, says that he has spoken with people impacted by the shooting that still can’t sleep at night following the events of that October night.

He came to the realization that someone needed to step in to help by offering people in need of professional counseling resources. So he got members from the school district, county, local pastors, and sheriff’s office to help.

“Especially those that have been affected by the tragedy on St. Helena, come out tonight. Get the resources, get the services that are available to you so that you can begin to heal. Putting a plan in place, so that we can come together and rely on each other,” said Gordon.

That event is expected to start at the Performing Arts Center on the campus of Whale Branch Early College High School Wednesday night at 6 p.m. and it will run until about 7:30 p.m.
