Beaufort County Sheriff announces retirement in letter to staff
BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. (WTOC) - In a letter dated March 12, 2026, Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner announced his retirement to staff.
Sheriff Tanner said January 5, 2027 will be his retirement date, “I have chosen January 5, 2027, as my retirement date, and will not be seeking re-election to the Office of Sheriff for Beaufort County.”
Tanner said Jan. 7 2026, marks 28 years of service as the elected Sheriff of Beaufort County.
In his letter he said, “Working alongside such a dedicated, talented group of individuals at the Sheriff’s Office has been the highlight of my 46 years as a law enforcement officer in South Carolina.”
