Arrest made after fatal head-on collision on Old Augusta Road
EFFINGHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - A man has been arrested following a fatal head-on crash on Friday on Old Augusta Road South, according to the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies with the sheriff’s office Traffic Unit responded to the scene shortly after 5 p.m. Investigators say a Ford Escape driven by 27-year-old Deiby Janamejoy Jansasoy was traveling north when it crossed the center line and struck a Chevy Silverado driven by 47-year-old Michael Sharpe.
Deputies said Sharpe was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by fire crews. He was taken to the hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Jansasoy was also transported to the hospital, but investigators say he attempted to leave before being discharged.
He was arrested and taken to the Effingham County Jail, deputies said.
Jansasoy is charged with homicide by vehicle in the first degree, reckless driving, DUI, failure to maintain lane, and driving While unlicensed.
The sheriff’s office said that because Jansasoy was arrested before the investigation was complete, additional charges may be added or amended as the case continues.
The sheriff’s office also noted that Jansasoy is wanted by ICE for deportation.
