AAA offers tips before frigid temperatures on Tuesday

by Joe Hennessy

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - WTOC wants to ensure drivers are prepared on Tuesday for the frigid temperatures that can impact their travel plans.

Cold temperatures often result in low tire pressure and dead batteries, according to AAA, leading to unsafe driving and/or leaving someone waiting on the side of the road for help.

Being ready on Monday could be a difference maker.

First things first, never warm up your vehicle in a small, enclosed space. That could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning and be harmful quickly.

Tire pressure decreases 1-2 PSI for every 10-degree temperature drop, according to Triple-A’s Montrae Waiters. So, tire pressure has already gone down 2-4 PSI since Friday when looking at previous temperatures tracked by the WTOC meteorology team.

“Severe weather can be frightening and dangerous when driving, so knowing the safety rules for dealing with winter weather emergencies is essential,” said Montrae Waiters, Public & Government Relations Consultant, AAA-The Auto Club Group (Georgia).

Car batteries that are three to five years old will have much less starting power in cold conditions.

Electric vehicle owners need to expect reduced range per charge, so find charging stations Monday along your route Tuesday to be safe. AAA recommends “pre-heating” the inside of the EV to a comfortable temperature while still connected to the charger.

It’s also encouraged to have a well-stocked emergency kit – with a cell phone car charger, first-aid kit, medicines, water, snacks, flashlight, and extra gloves, hats, and coats.
