90 families remain in Yamacraw Village as HUD demolition decision remains unclear
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The Housing Authority of Savannah is still waiting on a decision from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development on its demolition application for Yamacraw Village, with no timeline set.
The agency said in a March 30 release it remains in compliance with federal requirements during the redevelopment process.
HAS confirmed 90 families still live at Yamacraw Village and said it will cover moving expenses while working directly with residents on relocation.
The authority said it has held settlement discussions with the Yamacraw Village Residents Council, most recently on February 6 and February 20.
HAS said it proposed redeveloping 100 income-based units on the site, pending HUD funding.
Eligible residents as of August 19, 2025, would receive a primary right to return, while those who moved out between January 1, 2023, and August 18, 2025, would receive secondary preference, if eligible.
The agency also outlined additional relocation support, including covering application fees for Housing Choice Vouchers, faster security deposit returns, and added deposit assistance.
Executive Director Evette Hester said the authority remains focused on helping residents through the transition.
“Our priority is and will always be the residents of Yamacraw Village,” Hester said. “We are committed to ensuring that every family is supported through this transition with dignity, fairness, and respect.”
HAS said it will continue moving forward with the demolition and redevelopment process under HUD guidance.
