5 Georgia Southern fraternities facing conduct investigations

STATESBORO, Ga. (WTOC) - Five fraternities at Georgia Southern University are under investigation for alleged violations of the code of student conduct, according to the university’s website.

In September, WTOC reported that Phi Delta Theta and Sigma Nu were under investigation based on information received by the Office of Student Conduct.

Three additional fraternities are now listed on the university’s website as being under investigation.

Kappa Alpha Order, Pi Kappa Phi and Sigma Chi, chapters of the Interfraternity Council, are currently being investigated, the website shows.

Kappa Alpha Order has an interim suspension of all chapter activities in place. Sigma Chi has an interim suspension of all chapter activities in place. Pi Kappa Phi has an interim suspension of all new member activities in place.

Phi Delta Theta, one of the two fraternities previously reported to be under investigation, has an interim suspension of all new member activities in place.

Georgia Southern Responds

Georgia Southern University said in a statement that Kappa Alpha Order, Sigma Chi and Pi Kappa Phi are under investigation by the Office of Student Conduct after receiving information that warranted further review. The university said each organization will go through the standard student conduct process, including notice of the allegations and an opportunity to respond, before a decision is made on formal charges.

The university said the three cases are being handled separately from the investigations into Phi Delta Theta and Sigma Nu.

“As with any investigation, if information is received that establishes a connection between matters, the University would review that information as appropriate,” the university said.

The university also said the interim suspension of Sigma Nu’s new member activities has been lifted.

“The organization remains under investigation, and the decision to lift the interim measure should not be interpreted as a final determination regarding the allegations or the outcome of the investigation,” the university said.

Kappa Alpha Order responds

Kappa Alpha Order said in a statement that it has a policy on risk management and educates its members on best practices.

“Kappa Alpha Order has a firm policy on all areas of risk management, and routinely and effectively educates our members on best practices, with the goal of safeguarding the health and safety of our members and guests. Our national staff, local chapter and alumni leadership, and Georgia Southern administrators, are actively working to resolve the chapter’s status,” said Jesse S. Lyons, chief external affairs officer for Kappa Alpha Order.

WTOC has reached out to Sigma Chi and Pi Kappa Phi for comment.

Sigma Chi prior record

Sigma Chi is currently on disciplinary probation from Oct. 15, 2025, through Oct. 15, 2026. The Fall 2025 case, handled by the Office of Student Conduct, found the chapter responsible for organizational disciplinary probation until the end of the Spring 2026 semester, alcohol violations involving drinking games, contests or forced or ritualized consumption, and endangerment for placing others at risk.

Sigma Chi has been under four additional probations, as well as one deferred suspension, since 2021.

Of the charges brought against the chapter since 2021, four were for alcohol-related violations, four were for failure to comply with university policies, and one was for endangerment.

Kappa Alpha Order prior record

According to the university’s website, Kappa Alpha Order has been placed on probation six times since 2016. The cases have been handled by both the Office of Student Conduct and the fraternity’s National/International Organization.

In 2020, the chapter was placed on organizational status one and organizational social probation for a year following hazing and alcohol allegations. The chapter was found not responsible for hazing involving endangering emotional, mental, financial, physical health or safety. The chapter was found responsible for causing discomfort, embarrassment or ridicule through hazing.

Most recently, the chapter was placed on social probation for a semester after failing to achieve the minimum 2.8 grade point average.

Pi Kappa Phi prior record

According to the university’s website, Pi Kappa Phi was previously suspended from the university and reinstated in May 2017 after being found responsible for hazing and alcohol possession.

Since being reinstated, the chapter has faced three disciplinary probations and one organizational disciplinary suspension.

The most recent case found the chapter responsible for sale and distribution of alcohol for underage consumption, failure to comply, and underage alcohol use. The chapter was found not responsible for two hazing charges, and an assault charge was dismissed. The probation was completed in May 2026.
