3 more measles cases confirmed in metro Atlanta daycare outbreak

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Health officials on Friday confirmed three more measles cases in a metro Atlanta daycare outbreak.

The new cases bring the total to eight, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH).

The department confirmed four cases in the outbreak last week. The department announced the first case on Aug. 18.

According to DPH, the outbreak “is associated with a daycare setting in the metro Atlanta area,” where the children were either unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated.

“Once it was discovered that the adult had measles, they should have shut (the daycare) down, just like they did during Covid,” one parent said. “Just shut it down and kids don’t come to daycare until they get everything cleaned up.”

The department has not said the exact location of the daycare or of those who tested positive.

DPH is working to find and notify people who might have been exposed.

Fourteen people have now tested positive for measles in Georgia this year, according to the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC). In 2025, 10 cases were recorded.

The new cases come as the CDC shows an increasing number of parents are opting their children out of routine kindergarten vaccinations.

Georgia is one of 24 states where the overall kindergarten vaccine exemption rate exceeds 5%, according to the CDC. The state’s exemption rate is 5.1%, with medical exemptions accounting for just 0.1%.
