211 Helpline connects Georgians with resources during government shutdown hardships

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - As the government shutdown continues to impact families across Georgia, one local resource is helping residents navigate the growing hardship.

The 211 Helpline, ran by United Way of the Coastal Empire, connects callers with nearby nonprofits and services that offer assistance with housing, food and other immediate needs.

United Way of the Coastal Empire President & CEO Kimberly Waller said the helpline has seen many calls for rental assistance and food support lately. She said many residents in crisis may not know where to turn - and that’s where 211 steps in.

“One of the really powerful ways 211 supports our community is that it’s designed to be a one-stop shop,” Waller said. “When you’re in a crisis moment, knowing where to go can be overwhelming. Our specialists are trained to connect you to available resources.”

The helpline is part of United Way’s mission to improve lives by mobilizing community support. The organization partners with more than 50 nonprofits across Bryan, Chatham, Effingham, Liberty and Long counties.

Residents can access the helpline by calling 211 or emailing 211@uwce.org. A 211 website is also available where residents in need can search for services by ZIP code.

“We want to make it as easy as possible for our community members, Waller said. ”When you’re struggling and scared, it’s hard to know where to turn - and you can always turn to United Way."

The organization recently launched its annual fundraising campaign in Sept. to support the United Way Community Fund, which powers programs like 211 and volunteer initiatives.
