2 wanted for theft cases in Colleton, Beaufort Counties arrested after chase

COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) - Two suspects, who are wanted in connection with several theft cases in two Lowcountry counties, have been captured following a vehicle pursuit and a brief manhunt.

Sgt. Laura Rutland said Justin Bessigner, 28, and Emily Higgins, 29, are persons of interest in numerous vehicle and property thefts throughout Colleton and Beaufort Counties since Aug. 13.

Yemassee Police attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle for speeding on Highway 17A, but the stolen vehicle fled into Colleton County, where the pursuit ended on Highway 21 near I-95. Police said both suspects fled on foot after the vehicle stalled and caught on fire.

The driver, Bessinger, was apprehended by K9 Rio and Higgins was apprehended by K9 Deuce shortly later.

Laura Higgins was apprehended by K9 Deuce after she and Justin Bessigner fled on foot following a vehicle pursuit.

Both suspects are in custody at the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office.
