19-year-old Army soldier charged with homicide by vehicle after fatal crash

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - A Hunter Army Airfield soldier has been arrested after being involved in a fatal crash last month in Savannah.

The Savannah Police Department said a witness informed them that 19-year-old Camari Keys was traveling at a high rate of speed when his Honda Accord struck 29-year-old TaKyra Callaway’s vehicle at the intersection of White Bluff Road and Johnston Street on August 15.

Officials said Callaway’s vehicle and a Toyota Corolla were both stopped at the red light at the time of impact.

Callaway died at the scene.

The driver of the Toyota Corolla and the passenger in Callaway’s vehicle were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Keys was arrested and charged with homicide by vehicle, reckless driving, and driving without a valid license.

Fort Stewart-Hunter Army Airfield 3rd Infantry Division told WTOC they are aware of the arrest.

WTOC also asked officials about his status in the army despite not having a drivers license.

“Keys is an Aviation Operations Specialist serving with the 3rd Infantry Division and stationed at Hunter Army Airfield. Driving privileges are governed by state law and any violations while driving off the installation are subject to local jurisdiction. Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield are cooperating with the Savannah Police Department who is the lead agency for the investigation.”
