CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - An 18-year-old involved in an ‘altercation and stabbing’ at the Walmart on Highway 80 Thursday, October 23, 2025, has died, according to the Chatham County Police Department.

In a social media message just posted online, the CCPD says the 18-year-old “died as a result of his injuries this morning at a local hospital.”

Previously, police said that around 5:50 p.m. on Thursday they responded to the Walmart where they found an 18-year-old male suffering from multiple stab wounds and lacerations.

According to CCPD, the investigation revealed that a 49-year-old man was leaving Walmart with his shopping cart, when the 18-year-old kicked the shopping cart as he passed by.

This led to an altercation that left the 18-year-old severely injured, officials say.

“As we said previously, this is an active and ongoing investigation, and Chatham County Police Department detectives will consult with the Chatham County District Attorney’s Office to determine any criminal charges in the case,” the CCPD writes.

“The Chatham County Police Department is the only investigative agency in this case, and any information that comes from another agency or source may or may not be accurate at this time,” the message ends.
