AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A suspect is in custody, and deputies are searching for two others after a man was injured Friday in the second shooting in two days in Augusta.

The shooting happened around 9:30 a.m. at Curry Street and Browns Lane behind a Family Dollar that faces Broad Street.

Deputies said the victim was approached by a vehicle, and the victim was shot. Then the vehicle left the scene.

The victim, a 39-year-old Augusta man, suffered multiple gunshot wounds, but was able to make it to a business on Broad Street to call for help.

The victim was taken to Wellstar MCG hospital by emergency medical crews.

He was talking and alert at the time, according to deputies.

Deputies say at least 20 shell casings were found on the scene.

Around 12:45 p.m., deputies found the vehicle, a white Chevrolet Tahoe, suspected to be tied to the shooting.

Deputies called for additional units before attempting a stop.

As deputies activated emergency equipment, the vehicle fled, leading to a pursuit.

During the chase, the Tahoe struck another vehicle at Second Street and Watkins Street, according to deputies.

The driver of that vehicle was transported to Wellstar MCG Health with minor injuries.

The suspect, Santrez Ellis, 25, then fled on foot but was quickly apprehended and taken into custody, deputies said.

This is the second shooting in two days in Augusta.

On Thursday morning, a Richmond County deputy was injured in a shooting on Washington Road. The suspect, 20-year-old Dalyn Dewayne Elder, was also injured in the shooting.

It started after deputies responded to the scene of an armed robbery at a BP gas station.

And that happened a little over a week after a 16-year-old was shot dead at the Augusta Mall.

Brantley said Thursday that while there may seem to be a spike in violence, these types of crimes are actually down. News 12 couldn’t immediately verify those statistics.
