‘It’s gonna get crazy’: St. Patrick’s Day celebrations kick off on River St.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) - The shamrocks are out in downtown Savannah. The music is loud as the city gets closer and closer to Saint Patrick’s Day.

Residents and tourists are packing River Street Friday night, all in the St. Patrick’s Day spirit.

Shamrocks and Shenanigans has officially kicked off along the river.

Locals, tourists, and even some unusual friends joined in the celebration.

The festival offers five days of live music, food and drink, and family-friendly fun.

Visitors may even be able to grab a picture with Lucky the Leprechaun.

Lucky is the official mascot of Shamrocks and Shenanigans. He says the events offer a space for folks of all ages to join in on the festivities.

“We’re lucky that Plant Riverside is here to actually give us something to do,” said Lucky. “That’s not just, you know, partying — it’s family friendly and everything like that, which is nice.”

Saint Patrick’s Day brings tens of thousands of tourists to the Hostess City.

In Savannah, St. Patrick’s Day is more than just a one-day event.

Tourists come from across the country to immerse themselves in one of the largest St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in the world.

“St. Patrick’s is my favorite holiday so I wanted to do something fun,” said Amanda Costello, visitor. " I’ve always wanted to do like a big St. Patrick’s Day, and I heard good things. I figured if we’re gonna come all the way here you might as well go all the way in, so we did everything green. Everything I brought is green. I don’t have any other options.”

Many people are celebrating more than just the season of green.

From bachelor parties to birthday celebrations, the city is filled with excitement.

Visitors say they’ve been touched by the kindness of local Savannahians.

“Everyone’s super welcoming,” said Connor Hudson, visitor. “All the locals are showing us the directions, showing us places they recommend to check out, so everyone’s been really nice — southern hospitality for sure.”

Anyone planning to come down to the Plant Riverside District for Shamrocks and Shenanigans may also notice an increased police presence.

Savannah Police Department, the GBI, as well as other agencies will be patrolling the area, making sure the celebrations are done safely.

Locals say there is nothing quite like March 17.

They also shared some advice for newcomers.

“Just be ready for a large crowd,” said Chris Walthour and Samuel Battise, Savannah residents. “It’s gonna get crazy. I would say avoid the steps because the steps are very steep and you will make a tumble if you’re not careful.”

There are a few Riverside stages that will welcome live music over the next five days.
