‘A new sense of excitement’: Hilton Head Island leaders celebrate grand opening of new academic building

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (WTOC) - Hilton Head Island community and school leaders gathered Thursday morning to celebrate the grand opening of a brand-new, three-story academic building on the campus of Hilton Head Island High School.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony gave community leaders, teachers, and staff a first look at the finished three-story facility, which students and teachers have already been utilizing for nearly a week.

“This is my eighth year as principal, and I’ve never felt this much energy at the start of a school year,” Hilton Head Island High School Principal Steve Schidrich said. “We felt that going into the end of last year. As teachers were boxing up their materials, they were just excited about getting into the new space. Even seniors, who weren’t going to be here, just wanted to get in the building to see what they were missing.”

The massive, state-of-the-art building represents the first phase of a multi-year rebuild and renovation of the high school campus.

The modernization project was made possible by Beaufort County voters, who approved a critical school bond referendum in November 2023.

School officials emphasized that the new facility is designed to give students the modern space they need to learn, while preparing them to support the local community after graduation.

“We’re trying to do things here that will support not just getting other students ready for the real world, but also helping students and the economy of Hilton Head with the labor force that they need,” Schidrich added.

With the first phase complete, work is already shifting to the next major addition for the campus. Construction will soon begin on a brand-new Career and Technical Education (CTE) building, which school officials expect to be finished by the end of 2027.
