‘It’s a miracle no lives have been lost:’ Wildfire destroys 54 homes in Brantley County
BRANTLEY COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - At least 54 homes in Brantley County have been destroyed as crews across south Georgia continue to battle a devastating wildfire.
The news came during an update held by Brantley County Manager Joey Cason and Sheriff Len Davis.
The fire continues to hover around 10% containment.
There are currently 22 different fire departments cycling in and out of hotspots, according to Cason. The Georgia Forestry Commission has deployed tractors to cut fire breaks to try and keep flames from spreading.
A firefighter who was injured Tuesday has since been released from medical treatment. That was the only reported injury.
“It’s a miracle no lives have been lost,” Cason said during the afternoon press briefing.
The fire was moving North-Northeast as of Wednesday afternoon.
The Brantley County Sheriff’s Office is supporting a call center that residents can utilize for updates. For non-emergency questions, residents can call 912-462-2480.
Evacuation information
Brantley County Sheriff’s Office issued an immediate and mandatory evacuation notice for Browntown Road from Highway 82 to Greenleaf on the west side of the highway.
“If you are outside the mandatory evacuation area and feel unsafe, please evacuate now. Residents are urged to leave as quickly and safely as possible and continue monitoring the Brantley County Sheriff’s Office social media page for official updates,” wrote the sheriff’s office on social media Wednesday afternoon.
Winds may shift rapidly, creating unpredictable fire behavior. Residents are advised to stay alert and be prepared to evacuate immediately.
Those needing extra time, including people with pets, livestock or medical needs, should leave now. Others should be ready to leave immediately if conditions worsen. The recommended evacuation route is Highway 32.
